Are you ready for a big change in the UK's immigration process? Hold onto your hats because the UK is saying goodbye to Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards at the end of this year! If you're an expat, immigrant, or just interested in the latest news, this blog post is for you. Let's dive into what this means and how it might affect you.
Latest UK Immigration changes include BRP Cards being replaced by digital system

First things first, what exactly is a BRP card? It's a residence permit that contains your biometric information, such as fingerprints and a photo. This card is proof of your right to stay, work, or study in the UK. It's been a key part of the UK's immigration system for years.
So, why is the UK getting rid of BRP cards? The government wants to modernize the immigration system and make it more digital-friendly. Instead of relying on physical cards, they'll be moving towards a more streamlined, digital approach. This means less paperwork and more convenience for applicants.
All the Info you need
It's always bit daunting when things change in the Immigration system, but it's our aim to help you navigate these changes smoothly. We have outlined some useful information here for you, so take a look!
What's Changing?
Starting at the end of this year, new immigrants and those extending their stay in the UK won't receive a physical BRP card. Instead, they'll get a digital immigration status. This status can be accessed online and will be linked to your passport or other travel document.
How will the BRP card changes affect you?
If you already have a BRP card, don't worry. Your card will remain valid until its expiry date. When it's time to renew, you'll transition to the new digital eVisa system. If you're applying for a visa after the change, you'll receive instructions on how to access your digital status.
Creating an account will not change, impact or remove their current immigration status or your rights in the UK.
How do I get an eVisa and a UKVI account?
If you have a biometric residence permit, you (or your immigration representative) will be contacted with instructions on next steps on how to create a UKVI account.
Customers will be able to create a free UKVI account to access their eVisa here
In order to create a UKVI account, you will need:
- Your date of birth
- Your BRP Number
- Your passport (if you do not have a BRP)
- Access to an email address and phone number
- Access to a smartphone
If you have not yet been contacted about creating an account, you’ll be able to create your account and access your eVisa later in 2024.
If you have permission to stay in the UK, once you’ve created your UKVI account you will be able to sign in to the view and prove service to access your eVisa.

Benefits of the digital system
While change can be daunting, there are several benefits to the new digital system. For starters, it's more eco-friendly, reducing the need for physical cards. It's also more secure, with biometric information stored electronically. Plus, it's easier to access your immigration status online, anytime, anywhere.
How to stay updated
As with any change, it's important to stay informed. Keep an eye on official government websites, such as the Home Office or UK Visas and Immigration, for the latest updates.
